Active learning is an approach to learning in which the learner actively or experientially engages in the learning process. It occurs when learners are engaging with the learning process beyond passive listening and is generally associated with better learning outcomes in comparison.
Examples may include ‘making space for clarification during a presentation or lecture’, ‘brainstorming formats’, ‘group discussions’ and ‘think-pair-share exercises’.
With active learning, the learners’ autonomy is leveraged and developed, offering greater opportunity for involvement and control over their learning process. This promotes both learning of the subject at hand, as well as the development of learning strategies that can be applied to future learning processes.
