Definition

Deductive reasoning is the mental process of drawing deductive inferences. An inference is deductively valid if its conclusion follows logically from its premises.

What is the difference between deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning?

Inductive reasoning aims at developing a theory. Deductive reasoning aims at testing an existing theory. Inductive reasoning moves from specific observations to broad generalizations. Deductive reasoning shifts from broad generalizations to specific observations.

Why is deductive reasoning important?

Deductive reasoning allows you to use logic to justify work-related decisions. Even when the decision doesn’t work out, you can explain why you decided to do what you did.
