Mindfulness is the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something. This is a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, this is often used as a therapeutic technique.
To be mindful means to maintain a moment-by-moment awareness of your thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens.
In general, there are 3 key characteristics of mindfulness: Intention to cultivate awareness (and return to it again and again), attention to what is occurring in the present moment (observing thoughts, feelings, and sensations as they arise) and an attitude that is non-judgmental, curious, and kind.
