Glossary Term: Programming Language

Definition

A programming language is an artificial language that is used to control the behavior of a machine, particularly a computer. Programming languages, like human languages, are defined through the use of syntactic and semantic rules to determine structure and meaning.

What makes up a programming language?

Programming language is a system of notation for writing computer programs. Most programming languages are text-based formal languages, but they also can be graphical.

Why is a programming language used?

Computer programming languages allow us to give instructions to a computer in a language the computer understands. Just as many human-based languages exist, there are an array of computer programming languages that programmers can use to communicate with a computer.
