Glossary Term: Qualitative Data

Definition

Qualitative data is data describing the attributes or properties that an object possesses. It allows you to categorize the properties into classes and assign them numeric values. Yet, there is no significance to the data values themselves, they simply represent attributes of the object concerned.

What is quantitative data?

Quantitative data is data expressing a certain quantity, amount or range. Usually, there are measurement units associated with the data (such as meters, in the case of the height of a person).

What is the difference between quantitative and qualitative studies?

Quantitative studies rely on numerical or measurable data. In contrast, qualitative studies rely on personal accounts or documents that illustrate in detail how people think or respond within society.
