Intrinsic motivation refers to the motivation of completing an activity for its inherent satisfaction rather than for some extra consequence or reward. When intrinsically motivated, a person is moved to act for the fun or challenge entailed. External pressures or rewards often come secondary.
Intrinsic motivation drives individuals to do something because it is inherently interesting or enjoyable. Extrinsic motivation refers to doing something because it leads to a separate outcome or consequence.
There are generally three types of intrinsic motivation. Autonomous motivation refers to activities any individuals are more likely to do because they choose or enjoy them. Mastery refers to the motivation of individuals to get better at things. Purpose-driven motivation refers to when individuals whose motivation is in service of something larger than themselves.
